Article Syndication - What is RSS?

RSS stands for Real Simple Syndication and is an XML - Extensible Markup Language (Web developers and publishers use it) specification that allows content providers like HealthE-LivingNews — and anybody with a Web site — to provide a portion, or all of their content, to others via text files that can be easily reformatted.

The availability of a RSS feed on a Web site allows you to pull content from different content providers and see it all in a convenient new way.

What is RSS Used for?

Publishers of content who provide RSS content feeds — such as HealthE-LivingNews — make it possible for their information to be syndicated by other Web sites, or accessed by individual readers. An example of syndication would be when a reporter - a syndicated columnist - writes an article or report, which is sent out over a newswire (or the Internet) for other newspapers and publications to print.

Think of syndication as... Mass information sharing.

RSS allows for sites such as My Yahoo to aggregate (gather together) the content of a dozen different web sites and provide them to you on a single page. It can also provide instant access to news alerts and other information directly to your email through services like Squeet.com

Here's some example RSS Feeds

Notice if you click on one of these links, they are not very readable...

Because RSS feeds are not readable you need something called a RSS Reader to understand the content. Makes sense right? And services such as Squeet make it easy, by reformatting RSS feeds into something you can read.

For example, a typical email from Squeet.com could look like this:
