Learn To Handle Diabetes by Cathrine Niz
Diabetes is a disease in which the body’s ability to produce or utilize insulin is greatly hampered. Insulin is necessary to convert the sugar into energy required for bodily functions. Diabetes can strike at any age and is prevalent amongst both sexes. Its causes are not very well understood but family history, obesity and sedentary lifestyle significantly contribute towards the disease.
It is highly recommended that a diabetes diagnostic test be included in your annual medical checkup. You may not be aware that you are diabetic. Diabetes can be of Type 1 (your body does not produce insulin), Type 2 (your body does not utilize insulin properly), Gestational (in pregnant women) and Pre-diabetes (your blood sugar levels are high but not high enough for a diagnosis of Type 2 diabetes).
As with any disease prevention plays an important role. Sometimes it may be out of hand but you should not loose hope. If you have been diagnosed with diabetes then your life needs to be regulated immediately. Dietary habits especially what you eat requires alteration. It may be that you need to learn to live with the condition rather than fight it. It is also important that you do not let diabetes trigger of other ailments like heart disease or stroke.
Physical exercise and an active lifestyle are mandatory if you want to keep a healthy body and active mind. Numerous diseases are kept at bay and your body’s natural immunity increases preventing many infections from setting in. It is medically recommended that you should engage in at least 3-4 exercise sessions per week. The intensity and form may vary according to age. Keeping a watch on your weight has always been advisable and it becomes a necessity with your age.
Actos is recommended oral medication for treating Type 2 diabetes. It works best when combined with altered diet and physical activity. Actos lowers insulin resistance which insures that the present levels of insulin are more effectively utilized. This medication is taken once a day not necessarily with food. It can begin showing results in as less as two weeks but may take several weeks to see the full effect. Actos may have a good result on HDL (good) cholesterol and blood fats. It can also be taken along with other diabetes medication like Metformin. Those suffering from liver or kidney disorders should avoid this medication. Actos may cause fluid retention leading to heart ailments.
Metformin is another safe medication for treating Type 2 diabetes. It is recommended for those who do not take daily insulin injections. As with any medication consult your doctor before going on a course of Metformin. While taking the medication do not consume alcohol as it lowers blood sugar levels and combined with Metformin may cause life threatening condition called lactic acidosis. Metformin should also be avoided by those who suffer from liver or renal disorders.
Actos and Metformin are FDA approved and should always be taken under medical supervision and monitoring. Diabetes can be handled to an extent by regulating diet and engaging in physical activity. But its treatment is also important and should not be neglected. In the long run it would be best if you learnt to handle the disease rather than fighting its symptoms and suffering unnecessarily.
